Why Art?

Art has a unique way of touching people’s emotions and connecting them with something deeper within themselves and the world around them. Embracing creativity, exploration, and storytelling can indeed add a layer of richness and fulfillment to one’s existence. Art has been an integral part of human civilization for millennia, and its ability to convey messages, allegories, and meanings has been a powerful means of expression and communication across cultures and generations. Indeed, the stories and myths behind various artworks provide a glimpse into the human experience throughout history. The notion of slowing down to observe art is akin to the mindfulness and appreciation we can practice in nature. Both art and nature offer profound beauty and insights that can be easily missed in the fast-paced modern world. Taking the time to immerse oneself in the details, colors, shapes, and emotions expressed in art can be a meditative experience, much like connecting with the natural world.

Inspiration

This painting was directly inspired by Charles Burchfield’s exhibition “Heatwaves in a Swamp”. The inspiration I drew from the life and works of Charles Burchfield adds a layer of depth and connection to the painting. When artists draw inspiration from other artists, it becomes a beautiful tribute to the ongoing conversation and influence that art has on our lives. The large scale of the painting (5x6ft) likely enhances the immersive experience and allows viewers to become enveloped in the world I’ve created. Using various techniques, such as acrylic paint mixed with house paint, adds texture and character to the artwork, making it even more unique. “Heatwaves” is an enigma of summer, my love of nature, and the deep love for my son which illustrates how art can encapsulate and express complex emotions and experiences that may be difficult to put into words.

“Art is when a human tells another human what it is to be human”- Adrian Elmer.

Art is made to ponder, something to look at, think about and often times art is something you “feel about”. The idea of capturing fleeting thoughts or emotions in my artwork adds a sense of immediacy and authenticity. It’s as if I am freezing a moment in time, preserving an ephemeral feeling or idea for others to experience and explore. This aspect of my art gives it a sense of dynamism and life, drawing viewers into an emotional journey.

” The job of the artist is to always deepen the mystery.”
